Statement by Environmental Organisations on Samsung’s Consideration on Supporting Coal
It has come to our attention that Samsung C&T is considering supporting the construction of Vung Ang 2 – one of the coal plants that OCBC has stepped away from in Vietnam. One of Vung Ang 2’s original project sponsors, China Light and Power, also pulled out of Vung Ang 2 to align with their new climate strategy last year.
Response to MAS Guidelines for Banks
As civil society groups focused on building a sustainable and climate-safe future for Singapore, we applaud the important step that the Monetary Authority of Singapore has taken that will support Singapore’s aspiration to be the “a leading centre for Green Finance in Asia and globally”. This aspiration was articulated in our Long-Term Low Emissions Development Strategy released earlier this year.
Statement by Environmental Organisations on Singapore’s Migrant Worker Situation
We, the undersigned, stand in solidarity with migrant workers in Singapore. We call for the Singapore government, employers, and all Singaporeans to examine the systemic issues that affect migrant workers (beyond dormitory conditions) and ensure that they receive respect, decent working and living conditions and fair reward for their labour—the same treatment we would want for ourselves.
Open Letter for Diverse Voices on Emerging Stronger Taskforce
We, the undersigned organizations and individuals, are seeking to strengthen the Emerging Stronger Taskforce by making it more representative of our society. The taskforce should include members of the people sector, economic players that are most vulnerable, as well as businesses focused on bringing a climate-safe future. It should also seek to achieve the cultural, gender and demographic diversity of our nation, including representation from the disability community.
Appeal for DBS, OCBC and UOB to Invest in a Better Future for Southeast Asia
We, the organisations listed below, call on our Singaporean banks: DBS, OCBC and UOB, to step forward as regional and global leaders of sustainable development. Most Singaporeans, including ourselves, entrust our Singaporean banks with not only our money, but our hopes for the future. Our home-grown banks have played a crucial role in growing Singapore and providing a safe and healthy environment for our families and communities.
